Overview

Incorporated in 2003, Biodel possesses an experienced and successful management team, led by Solomon Steiner, Ph.D. Previously, Dr. Steiner founded Clinical Technology Associates, now known as Emisphere Technologies (Nasdaq: EMIS), where he invented their oral peptide and mucopolysaccharide drug delivery system. Dr. Steiner also founded Pharmaceutical Discovery Corporation, which later merged to form MannKind (Nasdaq: MNKD), where he invented the Technosphere™ drug delivery system and MedTone® inhaler, MannKind's Phase III product candidates. Biodel's Board of Directors includes senior pharmaceutical executives and experienced biotechnology venture capitalists. Additionally, the Scientific Advisory Board is composed of eight world renowned experts who offer valuable insight into the development of Biodel's product candidates.

Biodel has developed several therapeutic candidates for the treatment of diabetes and osteoporosis. All of Biodel's products were discovered in-house using Biodel's proprietary VIAdel™ technology, which reformulates existing, FDA approved peptide drugs. Biodel's lead product is VIAject™. VIAject™ is a rapid-acting injectable meal-time insulin. Based on our clinical trial data to date, we believe that VIAject™ delivers insulin into the bloodstream faster than currently approved meal-time insulins including the rapid acting insulin analog Humalog®, which is the market leader. VIAject™ is currently being tested in two Phase III clinical trials, which are expected to be completed by the end of 2007. Biodel is also conducting a Phase I clinical trial evaluating VIAtab™, an oral (sublingual) tablet formulation of insulin.

Additionally, Biodel has two products in pre-clinical development for the treatment of osteoporosis. VIAmass™ is an oral (sublingual) rapid-acting formulation of parathyroid hormone (PTH1-34), and VIAcal™ is an oral (sublingual) rapid-acting formulation of salmon calcitonin.
